lum isn't a warehouse. It's one person with a standard, picking a handful of lamps a month — the few worth keeping the light on for.

How it started

I couldn't find lamps I actually wanted to keep on the shelf. So I started picking them myself.

Everything online was the same hollow plastic in a different box — built to photograph well and ship cheap. Nothing I'd want to live with past the first week.

So lum became a simple promise: no catalog of a thousand lamps, no filler. Just the few I'd actually live with, chosen one at a time. If it wouldn't go in my own home, it doesn't go in yours.

How a lamp makes the edit

Three things have to be true before it earns a place.

No spec sheets, no star ratings bought in bulk. Each lamp is judged by hand, the way you'd judge it standing in your own room.

The build

Pick it up and you can feel if it's cheap. Hollow bases, flimsy joints, plastic that yellows in a year — those go back.

The light

How it fills a room, not just a corner. Not a harsh spot, not a dim glow — the kind of light you actually want to sit in.

The design

Would it earn a spot on our own shelf? A lamp you keep out — not one you hide when people come over.

Most don't make it. The cheap ones are cheaper to sell, so everyone sells them. We'd rather show you five than a thousand.

How it works

Five lamps. One month. Then it rotates.

A new edit drops on the first of every month — five lamps, picked by hand, photographed in real rooms. When the month ends, the edit changes and those five step aside for the next.

It keeps us honest. We can't pad the shelf to hit a number, and we can't coast on last month's pick. Five is all you get, so five had better be worth it.
